Event #42 No Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship July 10 Day 2

Around 1880 players from Days 1A, 1B and 1C will begin today in this next set of eliminations at noon. The goal is to reach between 500 to 1000 by days end. It will slow as we get close to the 560th position whether arriving close to this position takes place today or tomorrow as the money starts there. So far within the first hour Chris Moneymaker, Gus Hansen, Tony Cousineau, John Myung and Allyn Jaffrey Shulman have been eliminated from contention for the championship and a chance to win $7,500,000.

UPDATE 2:12 p.m.
Already we are down to 1700 players. Some who have left the tournament are actress Shannon Elizabeth, WPT Poker Stars Carribean Adventure champion John Gale, Toto Leonidas, Arnold Spee, Marcel Luske and David Sklansky. But the poker gods are still smiling on some like Phil Ivey who just doubled up to 52,000 in chips, and Greg Raymer is still in the field and doing well despite contrary reports he busted out.

UPDATE 5:41 p.m.
The tournament is on level 10 and there are 1,120 players at the tables. Faces who are still there include Paul Darden, Phil Ivey, Clonie Gowen, Matthew Hilger, Huck Seed, Lee Watkinson and Layne Flack. Some of the faces who are no longer there would be Chris Hinchcliffe, Dan Harrington, Cliff Josephy, Liz Lieu, Asher Derei, Mark Ellerbe, Jeff Shulman, Barry Shulman and Ayaz Mahmood. The top 10 players and chip counts look like this:

  • #1 Chris Lorenzo -- 253,000
  • #2 Layne Flack -- 227,500
  • #3 Chip Reese -- 200,000
  • #4 Tim Phan -- 190,000

UPDATE 7:50 p.m.
We are down to 945 players at the tables who will go to lunch until 8:30 p.m. Huck Seed the 1996 WSOP champion has been eliminated from this tournament. The top 3 at this point are Tim Phan with 420,000 chips, Graeme Harrison with 350,000 and Chip Reese having 300,000. Farzhad Bonyadi is doing well with 235,000. Layne Flack, Greg Raymer, Clonie Gowen, Howard Lederer, Lee Watkinson, J.C. Tran and Paul Darden are still in the field.

UPDATE 10:13 p.m.
There are about 720 players left which means we are 160 away from the money. As the announcement of the player count goes out, many feel that the play will slow substantially. We may not see the money tonight.

UPDATE 12:03 a.m.
With 603 players remaining, 2004 WSOP champion Greg Raymer is steam rolling ahead. With a few good hands his chip stack is at 315,000. The tournament director has stated that when the player number reaches 570, hand to hand play will start. Players have been busting out quickly the past hour. And Day 2 will come to an end by 1:00 a.m PST regardless of the number of players left.
